Can you visit Ness of Brodgar?
This summer, for the first time since 2019, we can offer daily site tours of the Ness dig. Excavation resumes in July, with the site open to visitors on weekdays from July 6 until August 17, 2022. Public tours are free and take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on weekdays.

Can you enter Maeshowe?
Visits are by guided tour only, which depart from the Maeshowe Visitor Centre at Stenness village on the hour. All visitors must check-in at the visitor centre 15 minutes before their tour start time.
Who broke into Maeshowe?
As described in the Orkneyinga saga, Maeshowe was looted by the famous Vikings Earl Harald Maddadarson and Ragnvald, Earl of Møre in about the 12th century. The more than thirty runic inscriptions on the walls of the chamber represent the largest single collection of such carvings in the world.
