Can you cycle on the South Downs Way?

The South Downs Way is 100 miles long running from Winchester to Eastbourne and takes anywhere from 2 to 4 days for most cyclists, although we know that some of the fitter riders have done it in a day! We recommend using a mountain bike to cycle the South Downs Way due to the terrain.

Can you cycle the South Downs Way on a gravel bike?

Gravel bikes and cross bikes (road-style drop-bar bikes with wide, deep-tread tyres) are fine if you’re used to riding them already. Travel light. You’ll enjoy the ride most if you’re not carrying too much weight.

Can you cycle the South Downs Way in a day?

Quite a proportion of the South Downs Way for walkers is on bridleway anyway, so cycling it is a very similar route. There are people who’ll try riding it in a day, but that’s pretty hardcore – you’d need to be a fit mountain biker to do it in even two days, and three is probably more realistic.

The SDW isn’t suitable for a road bike or a hybrid. We recommend (and hire out) hardtail mountain bikes. The big, grippy tyres and front suspension make them comfortable to ride and get you easily over most bumps and ruts.
