What is Cat SOS?
Cat SOS (Services) Web is the SOS program’s user-friendly web interface, which is accessed by logging into My.Cat.Com (MCC). With it you can view and analyse your fluid sample information online – anywhere and anytime you have an internet connection.
What is SOS fluid analysis?
The S·O·S fluid analysis program monitors equipment health to prevent downtime and maximize lifetime. The program uses Caterpillar®-verified, ASTM laboratory methods. These methods are designed to identify wear and contamination in fluid samples.
How is oil sampling done?
Three sampling procedures commonly associated with engine oil sampling include: sampling a pressurized line before the system filter; using a drop tube in the dipstick tube; and procuring a sample midstream from a drain port while draining the engine.
What is TBN of lubricating oil?
Total Base Number (TBN) is a measurement of basicity that is expressed in terms of the number of milligrams of potassium hydroxide per gram of oil sample (mg KOH/g). TBN is an important measurement in petroleum products, and the value varies depending on its application.
What are the three 3 methods for taking an oil sample?
When taking an oil sample what should not be done?
Running the machine for at least an hour and taking the sample within 10-15 minutes of shut down is the best way to avoid taking a sample that is below the optimal temperature.
What is the study of oil called?
Petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of Hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Exploration and production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry.
Why do you test lube oil?
A regular lube oil monitoring will ensure that machinery will run in good condition and will also give any warning of deterioration in advance which will avoid sudden breakdowns and save spare costs.
What is a good TBN number?
The TBN of fresh oil is typically in the range of 7 to 10 for gasoline engines and 10 to 14 for diesel engines. If the TBN drops to a point where the oil can no longer neutralize acids, usually around 3, it normally indicates it is time for an oil change.
What is crude oil formula?
Its chemical formula, C8H18, reflects the fact that each of the carbons is covalently bonded to one or two of the other carbon atoms and two to three hydrogen atoms.
What is crackle test?
The crackle test is a standard laboratory test to detect the presence of water in lubricating oil. A drop of oil is placed on a hotplate that has been heated to approximately 400° F. The sample then bubbles, spits, crackles or pops when moisture is present.
