Why did they use THAC0?
The second edition of Dungeons & Dragons had a bizarre rule known as THAC0, which was used to determine if attacks hit or missed during combat. The rule was needlessly complicated and it acted as a barrier to entry for new players. The rules in the current edition of D&D are easy to explain to new players.

THAC0 is an acronym for To Hit Armor Class 0 (Zero). It is a number that represents the chances that a physical attack hit its target. Lower numbers are better.

At the D&D Celebration event held in October, the lead designers and execs at Wizards of the Coast formally announced that “the next stage in the evolution of D&D” is coming in 2024.
How is THAC0 calculated?
A simple formula for quickly calculating the success or failure of an attack roll using THAC0 is: THAC0 – (roll on a d20) = AC Hit. For example, if the attacker has a THAC0 of 17 and rolls a 15 on his or her To Hit roll, the attacker has succeeded in hitting if the target’s armor class is 2 or higher (2 or worse).

Infravision is a status effect that allows a creature to detect the heat of others and objects and thus see better in the dark. All non-human races except halflings gain this ability on character generation, although this is bugged for half-orcs.

How does armor class work in AD&D?
In Dungeons and Dragons, your armor class, or AC, represents your defense against attacks from monsters. NetHack borrows this concept; as in older editions of D&D, a lower AC is better than a higher one. A character with no armor or protection has AC 10. It is best to reduce your AC below 0.
