What is a pressure Algometer?

What is a pressure Algometer?

Algometers are devices that can be used to identify the pressure and/or force eliciting a pressure-pain threshold. It has been noted in pressure-pain threshold studies that the rate at which manual force is applied should be consistent to provide the greatest reliability.

How do you measure pressure threshold for pain?

The PPT was measured by a trained physiotherapist, with a Wagner FDX‐25 device (Wagner Instruments, Greenwich, CT) on the upper four ACR tender points. The pressure algometer has linear response to force application between 0 and 1,300 kilopascal (kPa). The device has a 1‐cm2 round rubber tip.

Is pressure a pain?

It has come to be accepted as self-evident that the common stimulus for pain is pressure or tension on nerve fibrils and free end- ings. When the cause of a pain is un- known, we only have to suggest some mechanism which will generate pressure or tension and it stands explained.

What is an Algometer measured in?

The defined load is measured in kg/cm2 (Fisher 1986) using a feather algometer. There are also thin rubber plates which measure the pressure applied during palpation based on a piezoelectric effect.

How does a Dolorimeter work?

While using the pressure dolorimeter, the pressure is applied to the pain site directly and onset of pain is measured by the amount of pressure. The pain measurement system with power button, electrical stimulation part (ES), pressure stimulation part (PS), stop switch (SS), and emergency button (EB).

What is pain tolerance level?

Pain tolerance, is the maximum amount, or level, of pain a person can tolerate or bear. For example, when listening to a sound, the level of loudness, or pressure, at which the sound becomes painful is described as the pain threshold for that person at that time.

What causes nerve pressure?

It is usually the result of injury or infection. When swelling causes pressure on a nerve, the myelin sheath covering the nerve may be damaged. The nerve may also become entrapped or compressed. Nerve ischemia (lack of oxygen to the nerve) can also cause damage.

What is heavy pain?

Constant and distressing pain that affects many activities. Unmanageable and debilitating pain, which prevents most activities. Pain so intense it makes listening, talking, and other basic activities difficult. Pain so severe it makes most activities, including moving, impossible.

How accurate is the dolorimeter?

The interrater reliability of dolorimeter examination for detection of enthesitis was low (κ = 0.49 [95% CI 0.33-0.65]).
